From Passion to Purpose: The Story Behind SopraCyber

This is my first blog post and I am both excited and humbled to be able to share my journey with you, in the hope that I can enable and empower others in the same way my mentors have inspired me throughout the years.

Who am I?

My name is Alex, I live in Amsterdam and I am originally from Romania. I have started out as a computer science engineer and I have always sought a greater understanding of both technical and non-technical domains. My consulting career has naturally pushed me to a point where mentoring others became part of my responsibilities, and I have quickly learned that helping others grow is something I truly enjoy. After finishing my MBA, there’s always been an internal passion or urge for me to start something for myself and build something from the ground up.

Such a decision was not easy, and it required me to completely go outside of my comfort zone, quit a job that I loved and focus on building a company from scratch. I will not go here through the entire process, but I want to share that ever since I took that decision, I have learned so many things that it made me realize that the journey itself is the reward, and not the business itself.

What does SophraCyber mean?

In the search for a company name, as many can relate, it’s difficult to find a name that not only has meaning, but has Internet Domain and Social Networks handles available. It took me some time to figure this one out, but when I did, I truly felt that I can resonate with the name.

Cyber = Self-explanatory, so we won’t spend time talking about that. Sophra however, deserves a bit of explanation. When looking for inspiration and meaning, I sometimes like to look towards Ancient Greece, and that’s how I was able to find Sophrosyne.
Sophrosyne = Ancient Greek Concept that brings moderation, wisdom, soundness of mind and self-control together. It is the opposite of hubris and many Greek philosophers and writers like Plato, Aristotle and Homer covered Sophrosyne in their writings.

When you look at coaching, some of the things that we aim to achieve are to guide others through a journey of self-discovery, self-realization and help them achieve clarity, balance and discover the wisdom within. This is why Sophrosyne resonated so strongly with establishing a coaching practice, and that is why it stands at the foundation of SophraCyber, embedding these ancient Greek values and virtues into how this company will operate and have an impact with its clients and community.

But what about the Owl?

It’s also worth sharing few words about the logo. As you may imagine, a nice name is not enough to create a brand, so I needed something that connects Sophrosyne and Cybersecurity altogether. It’s easy to spend some time looking at a picture and finding hidden meanings, and by definition this is a subjective process anyhow, so I will share what these elements mean to me:

Owl = Symbol of wisdom, widely connected with Athena, the goddess of Wisdom.
Shield = Protection and safety, symbolized cybersecurity together with the lock, and the Greek meander means unity and architecture.
Circle = Symbolizes an endless journey and the idea of a cycle, connected with a Stoic learning of being an eternal student.

What now?

Today, 31st of October 2025, SophraCyber is officially launching and starting its activity. Today is the day when we start accepting and serving clients through coaching. While my cybersecurity experience allows me to better mentor and train people working in this domain, coaching services are destined for any professional at any level working in IT or within a corporate environment.

There are exciting things on the horizon for next year, such as Training Cohorts, Group Mentoring activities, free Webinars and so on. As with many things in life however, it’s good to take one step at a time, and for that reason we will only provide coaching services and a (very nice) newsletter this year.
